When the physicians eventually caught up with the dog, they saw something horrible: the dog was running down the hospital corridor with a black sack in its mouth
At the city hospital, it was just another typical day. Doctors were whispering in the hallways, nurses were registering new patients, IV drips were gently running in the rooms, and the air conditioner in the reception area hummed softly.
The sound of swift claws on the tile floor suddenly came from the end of the hallway as the chief nurse was looking over the appointment log.
As if by chance, a big, reddish-brown dog suddenly appeared around the corner. It ran with assurance, as though it knew exactly where it was headed. It had a black bag in its mouth that was securely knotted at the top.
Without hesitation, the nurse raised her head and yelled:
— Why is there a dog here? This is not hygienic! Take it out!
Two medical professionals, a surgeon and the duty nurse, hurried after her shout. However, the canine outpaced them, disregarding patients and shocked looks as it ran down the lengthy hospital hallway.
The dog didn’t notice anyone when patients peeked out of their rooms; some chuckled, while others muttered in perplexity.
It came to a sudden stop before a red-lettered door. The black bag dropped to the ground from its lips. Before turning to loud, piercing barking, the dog started to whine pitifully. As though pleading to be allowed inside, it got up on its hind legs and scratched at the door with its front paws.
The physicians realized why the dog was acting so strangely and rushing around the hospital when they eventually caught up with it.
Breathless, the nurse sat down and took up the bag with care. Everyone froze when she loosened the knot, revealing a small puppy with a twisted paw at an odd angle and barely breathing. Its fur has crimson spots on it.
The surgeon muttered, “He… he brought him here for help.”
The puppy had been struck by a car close to the hospital, it was later discovered. Apparently, the mother was the dog. It had recognized that this was the place to save the infant.
Since the hospital did not have an animal operating room, the doctors had to make do with what they had. However, the generous surgeon and two other employees located the required equipment and attended to the wound. The dog received an injection and had a splint put.
The dog’s intelligence and tenacity astounded the entire staff. It sat at the door and silently complained while the physicians worked, never removing its eyes off its small companion.
After the procedure was complete and the puppy was removed, the dog cautiously kissed its face before resting its head next to it, seemingly to console it.
