No one in the neighborhood stopped to assist the woman in a wheelchair who was standing next to the bus. The driver was just ready to shut the doors and go when an unforeseen circumstance occurred
People rushed on and off the bus as it halted at the station, with some heading to work and others running daily chores. A young woman in a wheelchair was standing somewhat off to the side.
She silently hoped that someone would stop and assist her in boarding the bus as she observed the passengers going past. However, nobody listened. Some hurried to find a seat, some were on the phone, and some just acted as though they didn’t see her.
The driver waited for her to enter while keeping an eye on her through the rearview mirror. He watched as she struggled to raise the wheelchair a little, but it was impossible without assistance. As the minutes went by, the passengers’ patience waned.
Inside the bus, there were irate voices asking why we weren’t moving.
— We will arrive to work late!

After letting out a long sigh and giving the woman another glance, the driver was ready to shut the doors when an unforeseen circumstance occurred.
The voice emerged clearly and childishly from the back of the bus:
Why aren’t we assisting, Mom?
Everyone pivoted. A young girl, perhaps seven years old, was standing in the back seat with her face against the window. She repeated, waving to the woman outside:
Why isn’t anyone assisting her, Mom?
The driver had already applied the brakes, opened the doors, and gotten out when her mother, embarrassed, tried to softly comfort her. She and her daughter trailed behind him.
Together, they approached the young lady and gingerly raised the wheelchair up the ramp. All of the passengers fell silent. Nobody made a move.
Upon the wheelchair-bound woman’s arrival and her expression of gratitude for their assistance, the driver turned to face the young girl and uttered:
— Thank you, my love. We would have left someone behind on the road and driven off if it weren’t for you.
The bus began to move once again, and the only sound in the quiet was the soft hum of the engine. However, there was a lingering sense that someone had just reminded everyone that humanity starts with the heart, not the strength
