For the first time, twelve-year-old Maya was traveling alone. Victor Hale, a harsh and cruel billionaire, was the only person on the plane who noticed Maya. Victor had a heart attack and collapsed during an incident in flight. The passengers froze as panic swept through the cabin.
Maya hurried into action, remembering what she had learnt from her mother, a nurse. She ran over to Victor and started doing CPR right away.
“Set him down! She said, “Tilt his head back.” After a few minutes of chest compressions and breaths, Victor began to breathe again. The passengers erupted in applause as a tremendous sense of relief swept across the aircraft.
Victor landed and was taken away on a stretcher. His eyes locked with hers before he vanished, whispering something too loud for Maya to hear.
She didn’t find out what he had said until much later. And she started crying after hearing those remarks.
The minutes felt like they went on forever. Victor’s chest abruptly rose, and he started breathing again. Applause followed a wave of relief across the aircraft. Maya fell into her seat, trembling and tired. Word got out that a billionaire had recently been saved by a young child.
Victor was taken away on a stretcher as soon as he landed in New York. Their eyes locked before they vanished. Because of the cacophony, Maya was unable to hear the words he mumbled.
She later received an envelope from a flight attendant. I’m giving this to you at Mr. Hale’s request. He was unable to complete his sentence.
Maya opened the letter, her heart beating, moved.
Maya pulled the packet open. A handwritten note was found inside:
“You kept me alive. I will always be appreciative. Your mother saved my wife at the hospital where I invested, so I knew her. I was never able to express my gratitude to her. Her legacy has been adopted by you. I will take care of your future. Visit me. — Victor Hale.
Maya’s emotions came because someone had finally paid tribute to her mother, not because of the money.
She reached Victor’s tower with her aunt a week later. Documents: an apartment, a trust fund, and a scholarship to a university.
“You will never be alone again,” Victor said, taking her hand. Be the person your mother would have wished you to be.
Maya started crying uncontrollably.
