A young, defenseless baby elephant was surrounded by a group of hyenas, poised to attack, but you won’t believe who saved it
The infant elephant was excitedly exploring the world and had just learnt to stand. The herd was traveling through dense grass and acacia shrubs on its typical path, from one watering source to another. An elderly woman, known as the wise matriarch, led them, and the mother of the calf remained near the big bull, occasionally caressing her infant with her trunk.
However, his curiosity overcame him. The calf spotted a vibrant butterfly while the grownups were raking up roots and leaves, and he went after it while joyfully flapping his ears. He trumpeted, played, and threw grass clumps into the air, all without realizing how far he had deviated from the herd.
The only thing he could see as he looked around was the infinite savanna. The calf halted, and his stomach grew frightened. At that moment, hyenas emerged as the bushes began to rustle. The child was encircled by eight adults. In search of an easy prey, their teeth flashed and their eyes gleamed yellow.
In an attempt to frighten the predators away, the baby elephant trumpeted and extended his ears wide. However, they only got closer. A hyena sprang forward and used its claws to cut his side. Squealing, he frantically called for his mom. When the herd heard his cries, the enormous cow rushed in his direction, but she was too far away to reach him in time.
And he helped the newborn elephant right then and there.
Abruptly, even heavier footsteps shook the ground. The hyenas were surprised to see a figure emerge from behind a hill. It was a large, intimidating elderly rhinoceros. His horn sparkled like a sharp spear, and his skin was scarred.
Scattering the hyenas like rag dolls, he charged directly into the circle. One of the hyenas fell aside as the furious giant stomped his foot. Sensing danger, the others started to back off and eventually ran away, screaming into the air.
The calf shuddered, but the rhino dropped his head softly, as though to see if the youngster was okay. The mother trumpeted with delight as she wrapped her infant in her trunk a moment later.
She gestured gratefully to the rhinoceros, but he merely snorted and retreated into the bushes, acting as an unseen savanna guardian.
The herd carried a legend from that day on: sometimes, just when you least expect it, fate provides assistance.
