After a long and demanding day at work, I had just returned home. I was so exhausted that all I wanted to do was kick off my shoes, collapse on the couch, and possibly even fall asleep for a while. As usual, I approached the door and instinctively reached for my keys. and then I became aware of an odd observation.
A tiny coin found lodged in the lock. Very little, nearly undetectable, but obviously out of place. I don’t have anything like that left, and I live alone.
I initially believed it to be a simple coincidence or a stupid practical joke. But what if it wasn’t random? That thought sent a shiver down my spine.
Quickly removing my hand from the door handle, I followed my instincts and contacted the police. I began furiously looking for information while I waited. Additionally, I discovered something horrifying.Be cautious if you ever see something similar. It turns out that robbers and con artists have long employed this tactic
Usually close to the lock, they place a coin (or a thin piece of plastic) between the door and the frame.
The concept is straightforward: if you are at home, the penny will fall out when you open and close the door. However, if it remains there for a few days, it indicates that no one is home, making the location a target for a break-in.
Thieves can use this covert and nearly imperceptible method to determine if a victim is on vacation or on business. They choose their “target” in this manner.Actions you can do to safeguard yourself:
- Even if you live in a safe neighborhood, always check the edges of your doors and your locks.
- Ask a neighbor to watch over your property if you will be gone for some time.
- Put in security cameras or a phony alarm system, at the very least.
- Keep an eye out for odd marks, paper, and coins close to your entrance.
Whether someone actually intended to break into my place is still a mystery to me. However, I’ve been considerably more vigilant ever since. And I advise you to follow suit.
